Brookshire - Sterling Forest - Baker's Landing - Archdale Manor - Oaks of Archdale - Archdale Landing - Archdale

You're Invited to the General Meeting May 13th Thursday Evening 7:00 pm
Ashley River Fire Station

AGENDA:

From the President by Carl Hoge:

As your new association president, I am glad to report that our notices for the maintenance fund we sent out this
spring resulted in a surge of responses. We are now at just over 41% as I write this.
Please keep those checks coming. Please mail you check to Archdale Civic Association, P.O. Box 41543,
Charleston, SC 29423-1543 or drop your check in our mailbox near the turnoff to
Archdale Landing on the boulevard. It would be great if we could break the 60% mark. There are
many projects we would like to do to make the neighborhood a better place to live.
I would also like to thank those families who enclosed more than the $35 we requested.
Later in this newsletter we have a list of all those who have made their payment for this
years maintenance fund. The weather has finally warmed up in the last month and more
people are out on the streets walking, running, riding bicycles, etc. Soon school will be out
for the summer and more children will be playing on or near the streets.
We are asking everyone to slow down and drive carefully within the subdivision. It would be a
real tragedy to have one of our residents injured or worse during this summer season.
As I was out running in the neighborhood, I was struck with how great an
area we live in. The flowers were out and folks were out working in their yards.
If we all work together we can continue to have a first class neighborhood in which to live.
We expect to have a boulevard clean up on Saturday, 15th May at 9 am.
We will meet at the front entrance and we will mainly be spreading pine straw and pruning
some trees. Please come out and help! The Fire Department has also asked me to
remind everyone that you are required to have your street number plainly marked so that
emergency personnel can find your home if you call them.
Our next general meeting will be Thursday, 13 May at 7 pm at the
Ashley River Fire Station. Please come out and let us know your concerns and views.
I hope to see you all there.

SPEED HUMPS Dorchester County installed three speed humps in the subdivision in hopes of slowing down traffic. Two are located on Knightsbridge Dr. and one on Botany Bay Blvd. The location of these speed humps were made by the Dorchester County Road Dept. Their decision was based partly on the lack of intersections and number of speeding complaints in that area. They have indicated they will also be installing more stop signs to slow down traffic , especially on Old Dominion. We will have an input to where these stop signs will be placed.PLEASE come to the next General Meeting where we will be discussing this. We hope to have a representative from the Dorchester County Roads and Drainage Department at the meeting. In addition to other topics of discussion, we would appreciate your input on locations for additional Speed Bumps and Stop Signs. Hope to see you there!
1. Code Enforcement 2. Speed humps 3. Stop signs 4. Grass Cutting 5. Archdale Blvd. Cleanup May 2004 Motorized Scooters & Go-Carts: I have had several residents complain on small unlicensed motorized scooters to me about almost hitting kids or adults or go-cart type vehicles. The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office told me that any unlicensed motorized vehicle is illegal to be operated on county roads. All our streets in Archdale are county roads. Code Enforcement The Archdale Civic Association has no authority to enforce the Covenants on the property in Archdale. We are not a Homeowners Association. They are enforceable, but only if an individual makes a complaint to Dorchester County. If you see what you believe to be a violation of the covenants you must call Dorchester County, Planning/Zoning, Department of Litter, Nuisance and Code Enforcement. Their telephone number is 832-0013. If no one is in the office, leave a detailed message on the problem on their answering machine. Be sure to leave your name and telephone number in case they have any questions. The association board members are more than willing to give you any assistance you may require. Street Signs Some of our wooden street sign are missing or in bad shape. We are looking for a wood worker who would volunteer at cost or at a reasonable price (we don't have much money) to make street signs for us. Please contact a board member if you can do this or know someone who can. Lawn Maintenance The man that has done Archdale for several years suddenly passed away in November. He is a hard act to follow. The new guy has missed a few spots, so bear with him as he should have us straightened out soon. Crime Watch Corner by Norman McDonald Your neighborhood Crime Watch is our first line of defense in Crime Prevention. Everybody cares about that, Right? Everybody wants safe and tranquil neighborhoods. I have yet to speak with anybody who does not. How about the careless operation of vehicles, motorcycles, golf carts and motor driven scooters in our neighborhood? These endanger our children, and pedestrians alike and collisions result in property damage, thrown trash from vehicles blight our neighborhoods and noisy motorcycles plus loud speakers in cars interrupt peace and quiet. New traffic signs and speed bumps have been and continue to be installed in our neighborhoods. Are they inconvenient? Of course. Do they slow down traffic and prevent accidents. You bet! The new speed bumps have been installed by Dorchester County based on traffic statistics and concurred with by their traffic engineers. These Speed Bumps actually increase property value because prospective buyers with children understand the inherent safety for their children. Suggestions? If you have suggestions drop the board a line or place your suggestions in the mailbox on the boulevard. Boulevard Cleanup Saturday May 15th at 9 am. We need all the volunteers we can get to trim trees and put out straw. TAKE A BITE OUT OF CRIME !!! says Norman McDonald-one of the newest Board Members assigned to the revitalization of our Crime Watch Program and he is a former Secretary. Norman McDonald lives on Mansfield Blvd & has agreed to undertake this task. Norman is a former Block Captain with a degree in Public Safety who will be looking for volunteers to assist in this program and act as Block Captains. Our primary focus is to share information with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Department. When Block Captains identify neighborhood problems, the Sheriff can concentrate efforts in those neighborhoods. He does that now based on [after] Crime Statistics. However, our goal is crime prevention and the Sheriff wants to help with that too. Crime prevention is everybody's business because it affects everyone's quality of life in the Archdale community. To report a Crime - Call 911. To discuss Crime Prevention - Call Norman at 767-3584. New Board Member Ted Hicks lives on Knightsbridge Drive. Married to Eleanor for 32 years. One son - Bryan who is 17. Retired loan officer from Stock Building Supply. Collecting dues was the primary reason for becoming a board member. Volunteers Needed! We still have openings for Board members. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Board, please contact a Board member or come to the next meeting. Congratulations Steve Hurley! On 14 April, our Archdale Civic Association Board member, Stephen Hurley and his wife, Julie, were voted to receive the SC COAC Family of the year 2003. That's the South Carolina Council on Adoptable Children. Congratulations Stephen and Julie! Stephen and Julie also had dinner with Governor and Mrs. Sanford not long ago, and he has asked Stephen to put back into action "The Adoption Procedure Study Committee." Stephen had done this before with former Gov Hodges and managed to put through the House and Senate some very good laws on these procedures. I am sure they will do another outstanding job. In case you don't know Steve and Julie, they are parents to 4 adopted sons and foster parents to many others. His efforts on behalf of South Carolina children are to be commended! AVON Fund-raiser Our last fund-raiser was done in February and we were able to raise $121.78. Thanks to all these Archdaleresidents who ordered Avon to help with the Archdale Blvd. lights and water system: Sharon Klaus, Janice Sorensen, Jill Jacquete, Nancy Cook, Cheryl Reseck, Sharon Hardy, Jan Hayward, Steve Hurley, Marlain S., Janine Peterson, Patty Pitts, Lynn Hennon, Maleca Whitchard, Ann Gregowicz, Linda Galloway, Melva Provenzano, Christine Jones, Gail Emerson and Tricia. We will be passing the books out on everyone's door in the next 2 months with a note on it that you will be supporting the Archdale Fundraiser-please order and be sure to give your order to Shelly Richardson (345-3665) so that it goes toward the Archdale Fund-raiser. Thank you for helping us to reach our goals! Advertising If you would like to advertise your business in the Archdale Community Newsletter, contact Linda Galloway at 207-7253. Advertising rates (per issue) are $25 for a small ad and $50 for a medium ad and $100 for a large ad. The newsletter has a circulation of 762 residents within the Archdale area. It is our policy to accept ads from similar and competing businesses. Maintenance Dues If you haven't donated yet please do. The boulevard is the first impression anyone gets of our neighborhood and your thirty five dollars will go a long way toward keeping it and other common areas within Archdale looking good.
